Questions to ask a wedding photographer before booking
The essential questions to ask about galleries, coverage, backups, delivery, copyright, privacy and the complete cost before signing a photography contract.
A good conversation tells you whether a photographer understands the wedding. A good contract tells you what happens after that conversation.
Use these questions with every shortlisted photographer. The answers become much easier to compare when the brief is the same.
Availability and who attends
- Are you personally available for our date?
- Will you be the lead photographer named in the contract?
- Do you use associates, assistants or a second photographer?
- How many weddings do you cover that week or weekend?
- What happens if you are ill or unable to attend?
Experience and complete galleries
- Can we see two or three complete galleries, not only highlights?
- Can we see a wedding from a similar venue, season, guest count or lighting situation?
- How do you handle rain, dark rooms and winter ceremonies?
- How do you organise family photographs efficiently?
- How much direction do you give during portraits and natural moments?
Coverage and coordination
- What exact time does coverage begin and end?
- Which locations and parts of the day are included?
- What does additional time cost and who can approve it on the day?
- Would a second photographer add value for our timings or guest count?
- Will you coordinate with the venue, celebrant and videographer?
What we receive
- What is the expected range of finished images?
- Are all delivered photographs individually edited?
- Will we receive previews, and when?
- What is the estimated full-gallery delivery window?
- How long will the online gallery remain available?
- What resolution and download permissions are included?
- Which albums, prints or engagement sessions cost extra?
Backups, rights and privacy
- What backup cameras and lenses do you bring?
- How are image files backed up during and after the wedding?
- What personal-use licence do we receive?
- May we print and share the images, and are there restrictions?
- May you publish our images on your website, awards or social media?
- Can particular guests or images be excluded from publication?
- How are galleries protected and shared?
Money and contract terms
Read the final contract and package description together. Any answer that matters to your decision should appear in the documents, not only in messages.

Understand copyright without turning it into a fight
In the UK, the photographer is generally the first owner of copyright unless copyright is assigned or an exception applies. Paying for the service does not by itself transfer copyright. What most couples need is a clear licence to download, share and print their photographs for personal use, alongside an agreed privacy position.

Questions, answered
Do wedding photographers own the copyright?
In the UK, the photographer will generally be the first copyright owner unless the contract assigns copyright or a legal exception applies. Your contract should state what personal uses are licensed to you.
Should we ask for unedited RAW files?
Most photographers do not include RAW files because the edit is part of the finished work. Ask what will be delivered and judge complete edited galleries before booking.
What if our photographer becomes ill?
Ask for the written contingency: whether they use a trusted replacement network, who chooses the substitute, what standards apply and what happens financially if coverage cannot be provided.
